Service Description

If stories were heirlooms we gifted to our families and communities, what stories would you tell? In this 6-week class we'll identify one story from our own lives and learn how to write it in a way that captures the reader's attention, then how to tell a story powerfully, keeping the audience fully engaged. Soon after the class is completed there will be a Live Storytelling Recital for students to share their stories publicly in front of friends, family and strangers. It will be very much like a musical instrument recital! Once we learn how to craft and tell a story, the live event is a fun community opportunity to share our stories out loud. Only graduates of the Heirloom Stories classes and Tell It Live workshops will be invited to share their stories at the Live Storytelling Recital. Arrive on time ready to begin and bring something to write with and upon to class each session. Writing instruction will occur during the class and homework will be assigned. Success in this class will depend 100% on the student's participation in class, completion of homework and willingness to receive constructive feedback. The Wednesday night Heirloom Story class is held from 6:30 - 9 PM. Bring something to eat and a non-alcoholic beverage for a meal to consume during class. There may not be convenient places to eat around the venue during the 15-minute break held during each class session. For an additional cost a Tell It Live workshop will be held before the Live Storytelling Recital for those who would like to gain more insight and practice on the art of publicly speaking and telling a story. The Live Storytelling Recital will be scheduled on Wednesday evenings and will be held at the East Olive Way Starbucks on Capitol Hill.
